Acne Medication

Acne is a commonly occurring and distressing medical condition, characterized by pimples, blackheads and whiteheads on the sufferer’s skin, especially on the face, neck and upper body. Hormonal fluctuations, clogging of skin pores, poor skin care practices and possibly certain dietary practices are considered among the major causes of this condition, which has been known to significantly tamper with the appearance of otherwise very good looking people.

In days gone by, there used to be very few treatment options for acne; but that has changed with time as more and more new and highly effective acne medication drugs are discovered.

The specific mechanisms through which these medications for acne work vary greatly from drug to drug. Although highly efficient and effective in their working – and often giving remarkable results within a few days of initial use, these medications for acne nonetheless tend to treat the manifestations of the condition, the pimples and the scars that is, rather than the root causes of the disease. Of course, this approach is better than attempting to treat the core cause of acne where that happens to be, for instance, hormonal fluctuations: because in many doctors’ opinion, ‘the hormones are best not interfered with.

So what most of the acne medication drugs do, for instance, is to clear the skin of blemishes (blackheads, whiteheads and scars, that is); in the hope that the core (underlying) cause of the acne will go away by itself with time, since the hormonal fluctuations that cause acne tend to be transient in most cases.

The drugs that have shown good efficacy at the treatment of acne include benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid and tretinoin for ordinary cases of acne, as well as accutane for the most severe cases of the condition.

On the whole, most acne medication treatments comes in the form of creams or ointments for topical application to the spots on the skin that are afflicted of acne; though there are some that come in the form of capsules for oral ingestion.

Most of the medications used for treating acne don’t come cheap, but they are not very expensive either. Taking benzoyl peroxide, seemingly the most commonly used pharmaceutical agent in the treatment of the condition, the price range we would be looking at is about $24 for a 60 gram tube. Clindamycin, coming at about $17 for the generic version is probably the cheapest of these acne medication drugs; while azelaic acid, going for about $140 would be the most expensive of the lot. Generally these are the price ranges we would be looking at.

Of course, the medications are not the only acne solutions available to the person struggling with the condition. There are people who express discomfort about the acne treatment drugs on account of the side effects they come with, and for these, the other acne treatment options that provide an alternative to the medication might offer a better solution to the problem.

In addition to the pharmaceutical medications used in combating acne, there are also other non-pharmaceutical acne products that have shown quite good efficacy at dealing with mild cases of acne, and these too, are worth considering before turning to the medication if they prove incapable of adequately addressing the problem.

Acne medication and Other Treatment Options for the Condition

Few people will argue with the fact that acne can be a very distressing condition indeed. How else would you describe a condition that afflicts people where they are most visible to others ‘out there’ especially in this era when people are so ‘image obsessed?’

In response to the distress felt by acne sufferers various acne medication drugs, as well as alternative treatments for the condition have been developed. Thanks to all these, then, acne need not be a condition to be ‘just coped with’ because it is in most cases a condition that can be adequately treated (once and for all) using these modern aids.
