Few people will argue with the fact that acne can be a very distressing condition indeed. How else would you describe a condition that afflicts people where they are most visible to others ‘out there’ especially in this era when people are so ‘image obsessed?’
In response to the distress felt by acne sufferers various acne medication drugs, as well as alternative treatments for the condition have been developed. Thanks to all these, then, acne need not be a condition to be ‘just coped with’ because it is in most cases a condition that can be adequately treated (once and for all) using these modern aids.
Starting with the acne medication first, we encounter a number of drugs that have shown good efficacy at the treatment of the condition: the likes of benzyol peroxide, tretinoin, azelaic acid and so on. Most of these medications are sold on prescription only basis, being the highly potent formulations they are, though some can still be bought over the counter at some drug stores, online and offline.
Most of those drugs for acne come in the form of ointments and creams for topical application (that is, direct application to the afflicted areas); though a small number of them come in the form of pills for oral uptake.
Cost-wise, most acne medication drugs tend be relatively costly (in the ‘tens of dollars’ range) – but then so are most other acne treatment options. The upside to the acne treatment medications, according to the people who have gotten to use them, is that they tend to be extremely efficient in their action, often wiping away bad cases of acne within days of starting to use them. On the downside, though, most of these acne treatment medications come with obnoxious side effects, some quite worse than the acne people take the medications to treat in the first place.
For people who find the potential of using the acne medication, curing the condition but then suffering obnoxious side off-putting, there are a number of other acne treatment options worth considering.
The first of these acne treatments that provide an alternative to going the medication route in the treatment of the condition is laser treatment. Laser treatment for acne makes use of extremely thin – but highly concentrated - beams of light that can penetrate the skin and combat the effects of acne (and its causative mechanisms) underneath the skin. A highly effective weapon against acne, the only downside to laser treatment for acne is that it tends to cost quite a fortune, driving it beyond the reach of many people of modest means.
The second alternative to taking acne medication is opting for naturopathy – an alternative treatment whose efficacy is based on the patient’s willpower, which (naturally) might raise eyebrows in the mainstream medical community; but which some people who have had bad cases of acne sorted with swear by.
